Yap Privacy Policy

Yap is a walkie talkie for close friends. We collect as little as possible, keep it as briefly as possible, and never sell it.
What we collect
- Your Apple sign in ID. Sign in with Apple gives us a random ID for you. We don't get your email unless you choose to share it, and we don't use it.
- Your name and photo. The ones you pick in the app. Only your Yap friends, people in a squad with you, and anyone you send your invite link to can see them.
- Your friends list and squads. Who you've added on Yap and which squads you're in, so only the right people can talk to you.
- Your phone number, only if you add it. It's optional and only used so friends who have your number can find you on Yap. We text you a code through Twilio to confirm it's yours. We don't store the number itself, only a scrambled one way fingerprint of it, and we never show it to anyone. You can remove it any time in Settings.
- Your contacts, only when you tap Find friends. If you allow it, the app scrambles your contacts' phone numbers on your phone and sends only those fingerprints to check who's on Yap. We use them for that one check and don't save them. We never upload names or any other contact details.
- Device push tokens. So your phone can play your friends out loud and get notifications.
- Voice clips, briefly. See below.
- Reports and bans. If you report someone, we keep the report (who, whom, and why) to act on it. If we remove someone for breaking the rules, we keep a note that their Apple sign in ID is banned so they can't come back.
- One more listen. After a yap plays, your phone (not our server) keeps it for 60 seconds so you can hear it once more. Then it's gone.
- Yap counts. For each yap we note who sent it, who got it, when, how long it was, and whether it played live. Never the audio. We use this only to see if Yap is working, and to show you your own numbers (your yaps, minutes, and who you yap with most). The per-yap notes are deleted after 60 days; your running totals stay until you delete your account.
Your voice
When you talk, your voice goes through our server to your friend's phone. Each clip is deleted from our server as soon as it plays. If it never plays, it's deleted after 24 hours. There is no message history, in the app or on our server. We don't listen to, transcribe, analyze or train anything on your voice.
What we don't do
- No ads, no analytics SDKs, no tracking across apps or websites.
- No contacts upload.
- We never sell or share your data with anyone, except Apple, which delivers the push notifications.
Invite links
When you share your invite link, the preview (in iMessage, for example) shows your name and profile photo, so your friend knows who it's from. Anyone you send the link to can see that preview. You can make a new link any time, which turns off the old one.
Blocking and deleting
Blocking someone removes the friendship right away and stops all audio in both directions. Deleting your account in Settings permanently erases your profile, photo, friends, tokens, yap counts and any clips waiting for you from our server, and revokes Yap's Sign in with Apple access.
Where it lives
Our server and database run on Railway in the United States. Connections are encrypted.
Kids
Yap isn't meant for children under 13.
